Los productos de la familia de fototransistores son componentes discretos sensibles a la luz que se comportan de manera similar a un transistor bipolar, pero utilizan luz incidente en lugar de una corriente eléctrica aplicada a través de un terminal del dispositivo para hacer que el dispositivo conduzca. En comparación con los fotodiodos, los fototransistores generalmente producen una corriente de salida mucho mayor para la misma intensidad de luz incidente, aunque responden más lentamente a los cambios en la intensidad de la luz. Estas diferencias dan como resultado que los fototransistores sean más sencillos de aplicar, pero menos útiles para operaciones de alta velocidad.
