Las interfaces UART (receptor/transmisor asíncrono universal) son circuitos físicos que convierten bits paralelos de un microcontrolador o CPU en bits en serie para su transmisión o convierten bits en serie recibidos en bits paralelos para su uso por otro microcontrolador o CPU. Los UART pueden utilizar protocolos RS232, RS422 o RS485 para la transmisión de datos y se seleccionan según la cantidad de canales, la velocidad de datos y funciones adicionales como osciladores internos, temporizador, contador, GPIO y puertos de impresora.
