Aunque relativamente limitada en la cantidad de energía eléctrica que puede disiparse en su resistencia, su capacidad de ser controlado electrónicamente facilita la miniaturización, la automatización y el control remoto de circuitos analógicos a nivel de señal donde de otro modo se podrían haber utilizado potenciómetros mecánicos.
