Los dispositivos de esta familia se utilizan junto con microcontroladores, microprocesadores o dispositivos similares con el fin de aumentar la cantidad de conexiones de señal disponibles para conectar dispositivos periféricos. El concepto típico de operación implica el uso de comunicaciones en serie que requieren solo unas pocas líneas de E/S en el dispositivo host para leer/escribir el estado de muchos pines de entrada/salida en el dispositivo expansor. La técnica intercambia velocidad de comunicación por una mayor conectividad y es más adecuada para aplicaciones donde la respuesta rápida no es crítica, como en muchas aplicaciones de interfaz humana.
